Borussia Dortmund kept Bayern Munich within sight of the Bundesliga title race after claiming a dramatic 3-2 victory over Heidenheim.
Dortmund had scored exactly three goals in each of the last four league games. They got off to a slow start and struggled to hold their own in the first 20 minutes. Their only opening attempt of note came when Serhou Guirassy cut inside and fired a powerful strike that was well parried by Diant Ramaj.
Midway through the first half, Heidenheim briefly thought they had taken a surprising lead when Patrick Mainka directed the ball into the net. The goal was disallowed after defender Gregor Kobel was found to have fouled as the goalkeeper attempted to force the cross.
In the 26th minute, Kobel was called into action again and made an excellent save from Eren Dinkci from close range after a rebound was kindly passed to the winger. Dortmund responded with increased pressure when Nico Schlotterbeck missed a header chance from a corner before Guirassy saw a daring chip crash onto the crossbar.
The hosts finally made the breakthrough when Ramaj failed to keep out another corner and buried the ball at the feet of Waldemar Anton, who made no mistake and fired home from close range.
However, Dortmund’s advantage was short-lived. Shortly before the break, Mathias Honsak stormed down the left wing and delivered a great cross, which Julian Niehues converted at the second attempt to equalize.
After the break, Dortmund started with renewed vigor and completed the comeback with two goals in the second half.
The victory increases the pressure on leaders Bayern Munich and underlines Dortmund’s growing momentum in the fight for the Bundesliga championship.
